HOW TO SUPPORT CHILDREN’S VOCABULARY

Multiple factors influence children’s academic and learning success, but if I had to highlight one crucial element, it would be for sure vocabulary. Why vocabulary, and not IQ, memory, or even motivation? First, vocabulary is a strong predictor of reading, learning and academic achievement. Second, vocabulary supports memory, attention, oral and reading comprehension, knowledge acquisition, and even IQ. Finally, vocabulary is highly malleable, meaning that parents can play an active role in fostering and improving their child’s vocabulary development.
